The brutal murder of young actress Meenakshi Thapa by her conniving colleagues for quick money has all the elements of a gruesome Bollywood thriller.

The naked ambition, deceit and depraved butchery that played starring roles in Thapa’s death underline the grime that exists behind the glamour. tabloid! gives you a round-up of some of the darkest episodes to have marred Bollywood. Happy endings, it seems, are reserved for the silver-screen musicals.

Rakesh Roshan
The year 2000 proved to be an eventful period for the Roshans. What happened next could have easily been a scene from one of his films.

"Two people came in front of me with revolvers in their hands and they started shooting," Roshan told reporters after the incident.

BBC relief at The Voice success

The controller of BBC One, Danny Cohen, has admitted the reception to The Voice has been "a big relief".

There had been criticism of the BBC spending licence fee money on a US import, in the style of ITV's X-Factor.

Its launch coincided with the return of Simon's Cowell's Britain's Got Talent, sparking a ratings war.

"I don't think you could do a show on the BBC where people were being laughed at and humiliated," Cohen told BBC staff.

"The combination of the warmer tone and the fact it's focused on talent rather than that comedy aspect was the reason I thought it had a chance of working on BBC One."

The Voice was a ratings hit in the US, where Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green appear as judges.

When it launched in the UK, with Jessie J and Tom Jones among the judges line-up, it overlapped for 20 minutes with the opening episode of Britain's Got Talent.

ITV had the most viewers overall, with a peak audience of 11.5 million watching Britain's Got Talent. An average of 9.5 million viewers watched The Voice, compared with 9.1 million for Britain's Got Talent.

But in the overlap The Voice was seen by 8.96 million viewers, compared to the 6.56 million watching Britain's Got Talent.

ITV is now moving Britain's Got Talent to a later slot to avoid a clash.

The BBC ran into heavy criticism in 2002 when it launched Fame Academy, which was viewed as a rip-off of ITV's Popstars and Pop Idol. It was eventually axed after two series.

Poets required for London 2012

More than 20 writers are still needed for an event to include a poet from every nation competing in the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

It was there that he began to write poetry, something he has continued since his release in 2011, when he was deported to Cambodia.

"Eight months in (to my sentence), I looked at my face in the mirror and asked myself: 'Is this all my life amounts to?'," he told the BBC's World At One.

"From then on I strove for greater, bigger things and began writing," he added.

Members of the public were invited to nominate their favourite poet via a weblink – over 6000 nominations were received.

Anyone in the world could recommend up to three poets from any Olympic country, in order of preference.

The week-long event, which runs from 26 June to 1 July, will include readings, talks and performances.

"As London welcomes the world this summer, we look to art as an agent for social change and as a testimony to human inspiration," said Southbank Centre artistic director Jude Kelly.

"The world's poets are coming to Southbank Centre. It will be a glorious occasion," she added.

The centre's poet-in-residence, Simon Armitage, is also helping to organise the event.

The event is inspired by Mount Parnassus in Greece, which was said to have been the home of the Muses – the goddesses of literature, science and the arts in Greek mythology.

The Counselor originated as a spec script by McCarthy, author of The Road and No Country for Old Men. Ridley Scott was quickly attached as director, as his next film after Prometheus, and then cast Michael Fassbender in the lead, a lawyer attempting to dabble in the drugs trade, and Javier Bardem (who starred in the Coen brothers’ film adaptation of No Country) as the chief villain.

Pitt looks likely to take the small part of a character named West Ray, described as a "mysterious figure [who] advises Fassbender’s character on the drug trade", while Jolie may be cast in one of the main female roles.

Jolie and Scott have been developing a biopic of Gertrude Bell, the British archaeologist who played an influential role in Middle East diplomacy in the first half of the 20th century, while Pitt owes Scott for his big early break, Thelma and Louise.

Production on the film is due to start in early summer, with a projected run at the 2013 awards season.

Ranbir over Shahid?

Choreographer Ahmad Khan, a close friend of both Ranbir Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor, was recently caught in a very uncomfortable situation when both the stars required his expertise.

Finally Ranbir got Khan’s coveted dates, while Shahid shot two of his songs with choreographer Chinni Prakash." It is true I had to opt out of two songs with Shahid for Kunal Kohli’s film to do the short film with Ranbir. But there was no other way out. Ranbir’s film is a totally new experience. He has narrated an entire love story in four minutes," he said.

"We had to use a 100 Nissan cars, arrange expert drivers from Bangalore and Mumbai…It was an entirely new experience. In fact, Shahid was most co-operative. He advised me to go for the Ranbir project. I felt sorry to see Shahid do the two songs with Chinni Prakashji with whom Shahid had never worked with before. But this film with Ranbir was a completely new opportunity for me."

Khan insists the last-minute opting out has not affected his friendship with Shahid. "In fact, I am choreographing another number with Shahid for Kunal Kohli’s film. There are no hard feelings between me and Shahid," he said. —
